NCCoE Announces Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) Demonstration for Government Use Cases

In December, the NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE)’s Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) team provided an update on their work and previewed the next use case for the mDL demonstration project: using mDLs for Government Use Cases. 

Background

The NCCoE, working with industry and government partners, has developed a reference architecture that demonstrates security, privacy and interoperability for real-world use cases in the financial sector (opening a bank account online), and delivered technical resources to support adoption.

Next Use Case: State and Federal Government Applications

The NCCoE is expanding the demonstration to its second project use case, demonstrating the use of Verifiable Digital Credentials (VDCs), such as mDLs, for access to state and federal government services. For states that have rolled out mDLs, this new use case will aim to demonstrate how mDLs can be adopted by state services such as the DMV, health services, or benefits services. For federal agencies, this use case will demonstrate how a user can use an mDL (or other VDC) to verify their identity with Login.gov to access online federal services.
