NCCoE Two-Pager Now Available: Effective OT Backup Management

The NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) has published NIST Special Publication (SP) 1339, Operational Technology Backup Quick Start Guide. This two-page resource provides an overview of cybersecurity considerations to help operators and manufacturers develop an effective backup strategy for their OT environment.

Having a reliable OT backup strategy is vital for recovering from cyber attacks and system failures. In OT environments, backup failures can have severe consequences, including extended production downtime, financial losses, and safety incidents. To mitigate these risks, this two-pager outlines key backup management priorities for an OT environment including integrating backups into the change management process, creating backups regularly, testing them, and reviewing them during recovery exercises.
