NCCoE Cybersecurity Connections

Registration for this event has closed.

Description

The National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) was formed in 2012 to bring together experts from industry, government, and academia to address the real-world needs of securing complex IT and OT systems and protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Maryland Department of Commerce, and Montgomery County have launched an initiative, called Cybersecurity Connections, to expand and take advantage of connections based on NCCoE’s work and capabilities. Part of the initiative includes a regular cadence of in-person workshops that will provide the business community with opportunities to visit the NCCoE, meet our subject matter experts, learn about our work, and understand how to get involved in projects. Each event will showcase a different NCCoE project in order to address diverse interests throughout the series.

Join us on June 28,2023 for an NCCoE project briefing and networking lunch! We’ll introduce attendees the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence and will then brief attendees on universal challenges in operational technology (OT) cybersecurity. Operational technology encompasses a broad range of programmable systems or devices that interact with the physical environment (or manage devices that interact with the physical environment). These systems/devices detect or cause a direct change through the monitoring and/or control of devices, processes, and events. Examples include industrial control systems, building automation systems, transportation systems, physical access control systems, physical environment monitoring systems, and physical environment measurement systems.

The NCCoE will provide a brief overview of our work on helping organizations secure OT systems. Attendees will also learn about a specific application of this work. We’ll highlight how the NCCoE is working collaboratively with the Water and Wastewater Systems (WWS) sector, technology providers, and across government to identify areas to help water and wastewater utilities mitigate and manage cyber risks. This project will soon be soliciting collaborators to join the project team. Given the abundance of small utilities in this sector, particular consideration will be given to addressing challenges from their perspective throughout the project.

Attendees will have plenty of time ask questions and learn about how to get involved in the project as it progresses.

The briefing will be followed by a networking lunch, sponsored by Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation, on behalf of Montgomery County, Maryland.
