Agencies face a delicate balancing act when it comes to providing mobile security. Federal information security specialists are tackling the dilemma in various ways. For example, in September, the National Institute of Standards and Technology's National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) published a revised draft of a mobile security guide that addresses the security versus usability challenge.

The D.C. region is home to the hottest market for cybersecurity jobs in the nation. Cybersecurity deals with keeping information safe — everything from your recent Target purchase to the most sensitive of intelligence at the NSA. There were 23,000 postings for cybersecurity jobs here last year. That’s the largest concentration anywhere in the country, roughly double Silicon Valley and San Francisco combined.

Ping Identity is the most recent company to become a National Cybersecurity Excellence Partner. Ping Identity is the 20th information technology firm to join with the NCCoE.

Along with the NCCoE’s other core partners, Ping will contribute hardware, software and expertise to the center’s work to accelerate the adoption of secure technologies.

Once the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence is up and running, how many companies could be drawn to Montgomery County? The NCCoE, which will be housed along Shady Grove Road in Rockville, will be a federal agency designed to bring experts from industry, government and academia to solve specific security problems.

The U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has awarded a contract to operate its first Federally Funded Research and Development Center, which will support the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence. See the rest of the press release from NIST.

The National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) has posted a revised draft of a building block to help enterprises address security issues that result from the use of mobile devices to access company resources. The NCCoE invites the public to comment on the draft.

In February 2014, the NCCoE posted a draft building block addressing mobile device security and invited comments from the public. The center received and responded to 24 comments and revised the draft accordingly.

On Tuesday, August 26, 2014, representatives of seven companies with technologies for IT asset management visited NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence. The meeting was the first step in forming a collaborative team to address the need for financial services organizations to protect their IT systems and data from cyber attacks.
