National Cyber Security Center of Excellence (NCCoE) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has published the draft of NIST Special Publication (SP) 1800-1824, Securing Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS): Cybersecurity for the Health Sector, with the aim of public comment.
Medical imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The system administers known as Communications System File, which is part of an organizational environment to provide highly complex health services which involves interfacing with a variety of interconnected systems. This complexity may introduce or expose opportunities that allow malicious actors compromise the confidentiality, integrity and availability of ecosystem PACS.
NCCoE analyzed the risk factors relative to the ecosystem PACS using a risk assessment based on NIST Cybersecurity Framework and other relevant standards. After that, the Center developed an implementation example demonstrating how HDOS can use based on commercially available standards and to better protect the ecosystem PACS cybersecurity technologies.
This practical guide will help implement HDOS current cybersecurity standards and best practices to reduce risk, while maintaining the performance and usability of PACS.
