The National Institute of Standards and Technology has opened a public comment period, closing on March 18, for feedback on the challenge and scope of a new project aimed at managing the security of  sensor networks in smart buildings.

NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence is seeking public feedback on a project to improve internet of things sensors used to keep track of the physical environment in a building, including security and safety. “Detecting and preventing an attack are challenging because IoT sensor networks typically have limited processing power and a constrained ability for security monitoring and maintenance,” the center explained. The project will also delve into the security requirements of the devices themselves. Comments are open through March 18.

The strong focus on cybersecurity will continue in the new year.  In September of 2018, NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) along with NCCoE (National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence) published a standard for IT Asset Managers.  Initially, compliance with the new NIST Cybersecurity Framework Version 1.1 will only be for governmental agencies.  However, just as other governmental best practices have trickled down into commercial enterprise, this too will find its way to a wider audience.

The NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) has successfully completed two projects – and is working on a third – where FIDO protocols were specifically chosen to address authentication problems for Public Safety/First Responders, as well as to mitigate the risk of e-commerce fraud. Practice guidelines have also been published by the NCCoE to assist anyone choosing to adopt this superior authentication capability.

The departments of Commerce and Homeland Security today released an eagerly awaited “roadmap” to implementing their recommendations to the president on fighting botnets, addressing issues such as securing the Internet of Things and setting the stage for a major stakeholder process that will involve extensive government-industry engagement. The 27-page roadmap foresees a major role for industry and will be followed by an update to the president in one year.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has tapped ForeScout Technologies to take part in a research project that seeks to protect internet of things-“based devices and critical infrastructure from cyber threats.

ForeScout said Wednesday it will work with NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence on the IoT security project to implement best practices and cyber strategies to help the health care, energy and hospitality sectors from distributed denial-of-service attacks and other threats.
